Spring Cleaning

It's been a while since I've moved, so it's been a while since I've done any real serious purging of Stuff. For a long time, I was moving pretty much every year, even if it was just into and out of the dorms, so I was constantly getting rid of stuff just to not have to pack it up and haul it somewhere.

We've been living in this house for five years in July, and although I've gone through and gotten rid of some things along the way, mostly it's just been piling up, and it finally hit the point where I can't stand it anymore.

There are a lot of things in my life that I really feel like I don't have control of right now, but this is one thing that I can, so I'm going to. Of course, as soon as I started I realized that it was a much bigger project than I'd anticipated, but I think in the end it'll be worth it.

I'm pretty much looking at everything and asking two questions:
1. Does this serve a practical purpose?
2. Does this give me joy?

If the answer to either one of those questions is yes, then I keep it. If the answer is no to both, then it goes, either in the garbage or to be donated or otherwise re-homed. (I just packed up a bunch of little collectable toys that will go with me Arisia to be put on a freebie table, for example. So they'll be hanging around for a little while, but they're not cluttering up my space in the meantime.)

Once I do the first round, I intend to do a second round where I ask, "Does this serve a practical purpose here and now? Do you foresee a use for it in the near future?" If I can still answer yes, then it will really stay. If the answer is no, I'll have to make a call on it. Likewise, I'll be asking if the things that give me joy just by their existence are really worth keeping.

I expect it's probably going to take something like a month to get through it all... and that's just my bedroom. I've budgeted some money to get stuff to use for organization, so that I can really get things in order, and make sure everything has a proper place to be put, at least as best as I can manage.

Because really, I've been holding on to a lot of stuff for a long time, and why? I have a whole box of memorabilia from concerts and whatnot, but what good does it do just sitting there under the bed? I think I'll probably sort through that, find the things that I really want to keep, and turn them into some kind of big collage and hang it up. That would seem to make more sense than just having it all sit there, unseen by anyone (including me).

I'm sure I'll be whining about, "Why did I ever decide to do this?" soon enough, but no matter how much I whine, it's getting done. I've had enough.
